In 1982 he earned his Ph.D. (Dr.) in Electrical Engineering, also from Erlangen University, for his work on digital audio coding and perceptual measurement techniques. The techniques described in his thesis form the basis of MPEG Layer-3 (mp3), MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and most other modern audio compression schemes.
In 1994 he received the AES Fellowship Award for his work on perceptual audio coding and psychoacoustics. In 1998 he received the AES silver medal award for his continued contributions and leadership to the art and science of perceptual audio coding.
In 2000 the "Deutsche Zukunftspreis" was awarded to him and his colleagues Harald Popp and Berhard Grill.
Since October 2000 Prof. Brandenburg has been the director of the Institute for Media Technology at TU Ilmenau. He is also in charge of the recently set up Fraunhofer Institute of Digital Media Technology (IDMT).
zur AuswahlHe received the M.S. degree (Diplom) in Mathematics from the University of Regensburg, Germany, in 1997.
In 1998 he joined the department Audio/Multimedia at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS-A) in Erlangen, Germany. There he worked on MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and on the development of MPEG-4 Low Delay AAC.
Since 2000 he has been with the Fraunhofer Arbeitsgruppe Elektronische Medientechnologie (AEMT) and thereafter with the recently set up Fraunhofer Institute for digital media technology (IDMT) in Ilmenau, Germany. He is currently working for his Ph.D. thesis on audiocoding based on finite fields.
Ralf Geiger is AES student member since the foundation of the AES Ilmenau student section in 2000.
zur AuswahlSince 1998 he has been studying Media Technology focussing on Media Production at the TU Ilmenau.
Sascha Rißmann has been a student member of the AES since 2001.
zur AuswahlHe is studying at Technische Universität Ilmenau since October 1998. In April 2000 he changed from "Media Technology" to "Electrical Engineering" focussing on "General and Theoretical Electrical Engineering".
Christian Richter is AES student member since 2000.
